I find it difficult while writing proposals for spaces, in this blog, on facebook and in emails to avoid using the word receive ie "Any funds we receive....", "Any submissions we receive...", "If you give to kickstarter then you will receive...". It is annoying but a good sign that we have named this festival well.
Just as a fun exercise I looked up words that are related to 'receive'.

work work work
Tick Tock Blume is this Thursday at Club Pantheon. We will hopefully raise a bunch of money for Receiver Fest. Ive been teaching myself how to screen print so that I could make posters to sell at Blume alongside the t-shirts. We have a young woman, a friend of one of my studio mates, making a design for the t-shirts. I letterpressed a ton of tags which have mostly been dispersed at this point. I was thinking of making some more with Jenna's stamps and hanging them on every bike in town. Nicky Click is going to be here Wednesday and staying at our house most likely. She is also facilitating a queer sex talk the day after Blume. The things we still have to accomplish are decking out the airstream, picking up artwork, making tags for the pieces, getting the design for the t-shirt, setting everything up with the DJs, printing more posters, talking up the show...
This is the part of putting something like this together where sleep and eating is a luxury. Im excited because if we make a ton of money for Receiver then Jarod and I can rest a little easier and be that much closer to making some big decisions on what the festival will look like.

It is so crazy that Blume has been around for 2 years. I remember sitting at Ladd, Anna and Rachel's house on Spring street with Luca, Sam, Matt and Teo. There would be some good tunes on, beer, screen printing and the sound of the type writer (because we hand typed every single one of those tags back then). I wonder if I was aware at the time how important those moments were. I hope that in my 19 or 20 year old head that I was thoroughly enjoying it and not distracted by some self consciousness. If I remember anything about college I hope the Blume production team is a part of that. Rachel and I are the only originals left. I have a feeling that it will end with us which is sad to me. I could see it being picked up by some other young college students and working off what we have built.
Other than all of this resting on my shoulders I am trying my best to be pleasant with everyone even though I feel impatient and grumpy. Perhaps it is this lingering cold, the moon cycle I am in or stress that is making me feel so irritated. The real challenge with Blume and I is for me to not be overcome by the stress of it. If I can relax enough to dance, get drunk and talk with my friends on Thursday it will be a triumphant night.

kickstarter project
Our project on kickstarter.com has been up for only 2 days and we already have 6 backers! I am certainly feeling the love from everyone. Jarod and I are working hard to figure out who is going to be in the festival and where we will exhibit these works. I really cannot wait to announce who will be in the first annual Receiver Time Based Media Festival.

Panelist Review
We finished our review with our panelists. I am utterly blown away at how many amazing subissions we got in. We will not have our final list for some time. Jarod and I will need several more looks at certain works to decide on who exactly we will invite. I think this festival could very easily permeate the city with tons of video of all themes, performance, music and sculpture. There has never before been an event like this in Charleston. The artists came from all over the country, Canada, the Netherlands and the UK. It is exciting how many talented people were able to participate in our open call. Our panelists were troopers, sitting for 8 hours in the dark watching all 80 submissions. Now is the time for serious fund raising, venue scouting and PR.

Receiver Time Based Media Festival
Receiver Time Based Media Festival is an event that has been in the works probably for about a year. We will be showcasing time based media (video, film, installation, performance, kinetic sculpture) in the downtown area of Charleston SC on March 10-13th. We also will be curating a 6 week long show at Redux Contemporary Art Center in conjunction with the festival. We have been working hard at getting submissions in and organized. This weekend we will be meeting with an anonymous group of panelists to discuss who will make the cut.
The festival is being organized by Jarod Charzewski and me (Liz Vaughan) who both live and work in Charleston SC. We hope to bring a really progressive and entertaining event to our city. Today Jarod and I finished going through all of our submissions we got in. We received 80 different submission packets with some of them containing several different discs of work. I cant really believe the time has come to pick who will invite to Receiver Fest.
The month of October will be our main time for fun-raising... Any funds we acquire go straight to accommodating artists who will be involved in the festival. We hope to bring a bunch of out-of-towners and we'd like to make sure their travel expenses were offset with awesome southern hospitality and hopefully a free place to sleep for the weekend. Other funds would go towards any expenses from venue rental, equipment or merchandise production. We also would be into throwing some fun parties to celebrate such an awesome event that has never happened in Charleston before... or at least not on this scale and involving only time based media. For our fun-raising will be creating a kickstarter project that will be fun to participate in. Basically if you give us money we give you sweet 'rewards' other than good karma such as screen printed t-shirts, free rickshaw rides during the festival and some other cool stuff reserved just for kickstarter supporters. Blume Artshows will be throwing a party for us called Tick Tock Blume featuring art based around the idea of time including whatever media. There has been talk of an interactive time machine, live screen printing, live painting, awesome DJs and who knows what else. So if you live in Charleston be sure to attend Tick Tock Blume!!!
